Education Ismail received his Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from Trent University in 1988 where he graduated on the Deans Honour List and received the John J. Robinette Award. He then obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto in 1991 and joined the firm of Aylesworth LLP upon his call to the Bar of Ontario in 1993. Ismail founded Barmania Lawyers in 2007.
Personal Injury Litigation Ismail practices personal injury litigation representing individuals who have been involved in accidents involving cars, motorcycles, boats, bicycles, snowmobiles, all terrain vehicles and personal watercraft. He also acts on claims resulting from slip and fall incidents and other types of occupier's liability.
Ismail represents individuals in connection with insurance disputes such as accident benefit claims, long term disability, life insurance and fire loss claims.
Ismail has also handled numerous medical malpractice claims particularly children injured in the course of labour and delivery. These claims usually involve complex neurological injuries.
Many of his cases involve catastrophic physical and/or neurological injuries and fatal accidents. Ismail represents many children with acquired brain injuries and serious orthopaedic injuries.
Ismail has argued cases at all levels of court including the Superior Court of Ontario, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Estate Planning and Litigation In 1999 Ismail received his qualifications as a Certified Financial Planner. He does not practice financial planning but has extensive experience in preparing comprehensive and complex estate plans and trusts for his clients.
Ismail also has extensive experience in estate litigation including will challenges, dependant's relief claims and beneficiary/trustee disputes.
Health Law Ismail also acts for corporations in the health care industry on Canadian regulatory requirements and in health care related litigation. Ismail regularly assists corporations in seeking and obtaining approval from Health Canada for the sale and distribution of medical devices in Canada and in drafting the accompanying agreements for distribution and licensing of such devices.
Charities Ismail has served on the Boards of Directors of charities involved with assisting children with acquired brain injuries.
Ismail has also acted as the Vice-Chairman of and General Counsel to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (Canada), which is a charity dedicated to alleviating the effects of poverty and disease in the children of South Africa.
